• 250 g wholemeal bread mix
  • 250 g white bread mix
  • 175 g mature Cheddar, grated (optional)
  • 1 tbsp raisins, for eyes
  • 1 tbsp extra flour, for kneading
  • 1 medium egg, beaten

  1. 1

Make up the bread according to packet instructions. After kneading for the second time, preheat the oven to 200ºC, fan 180ºC, gas 6.

  2. 2

If using the cheese, mix into the dough at this stage. Divide the bread dough into 12 pieces, to suit the size of your child’s hands.

  3. 3

Dust a surface with plenty of flour, and start shaping.

  4. 4

For the crocodile, make a long worm shape and use children’s safe scissors to make the scales on his back.

  5. 5

For the hedgehog, make a ball and point the nose, and use children’s scissors to make deep cuts in his back for the spikes.

  6. 6

For the snail, make a worm shape, roll up, add two raisins for eyes and make two antennae for the front. Stick them on with the beaten egg.

  7. 7

Place on a floured baking sheet. Cover loosely with a clean, damp tea towel. Set aside to rise for 15 minutes or so. Brush with the beaten egg and bake for 15 minutes or until golden. Serve warm.
