Butter the bread slices and then cut each slice into triangles.
Arrange the triangles in a buttered ovenproof baking dish and scatter the fruit over and between the bread.
In a bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla and spices.
Pour over the bread, making sure the slices are soaked. Leave to stand for 20 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 180º C, fan 160ºC, gas 4. Sprinkle the surface with the remaining sugar and bake for 35 minutes.
Serve with cream or custard.
