1. Put the olive oil in a medium saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 8-10 minutes, until softened.
2. Add the garlic and cook over a low heat for 1 minute, then add the tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, sugar, soy sauce, oregano and bay leaves. Add a splash of water and season, then leave to simmer for 40 minutes until thickened. Remove the bay leaves.
3. Meanwhile, bring a large pan of water to the boil. Cook the pasta to packet instructions, then drain.
4. Stir the chopped basil through the pasta sauce, then add the cooked pasta. Divide between 4 plates to serve.
